A Taste of Mediterranean: When the Middle East Meets the Jersey Shore

With temperatures dropping into the teens, many locals crave a visit to the warm Mediterranean.  Café 28, Red Bank, lacks the beaches and the sun, but it offers the warm hospitality of Egyptian owner Mohamed Elbery and his homemade Mediterranean food.  While he has resided in the United States for over 20 years, his Red Bank café is nearing its third birthday. 


His menu offers many typical Mediterranean favorites, including falafel, which many believe was actually invented by Egyptian Bedouins using ground fava beans instead of chick peas. Popular items range from falafel and gyros, as well as ismat eggplant on a pita , Greek salads, or traditional Egyptian halloumi salad.  A recent addition to the menu is Turkish coffee, perfectly paired with the café’s array of desserts including cookies, baklava, or kataifi. The cafe has limited seating, so most customers take-out.


Customers comment that the café is especially appealing because it offers Mediterranean fare - including many vegan options - for adventurous eaters, but also pizza, deli sandwiches and wraps for those seeking more traditional American food. Most visitors agree: Mohamed’s friendly smile and delicious food can warm up even the coldest days.


Café 28 is located at 64 White Street, Red Bank, next to Hobby Master.  Its hours are Monday through Saturday, 8 am to 9 pm and Sunday 11 am to 6 pm. The phone number is (732) 933-1400.
