Nick Campanello Memorialized with Tree at Ridgewood High

A dogwood tree planted on the grounds of Ridgewood High School now serves as a reminder of a popular student who died after an asthma attack in August, according to a Ridgewood News report.

The paper reports a small collection of Nick Camapenello's friends and staff from Ridgewood High School and Mount Carmel Catholic Church organized the December planting near the footbridge. A plaque accompanies the tree.

A small, private ceremony of about 30 featured poetry readings, stories recalling the life of Campanello and prayer, according to the report.

Friends and family of Campanello, 16, lobbied the council in September to allow a plaque to be built at the lookout on Crest Road, his favorite locale. But concern over precedent led the council to nix the plan, instead suggested a tree planting.
