The officers of the Ridgewood Police Department are a common sight at Van Neste Square, watching for speeders and others to commit infractions crossing the chaotic intersection of Oak Street and East Ridgewood Avenue. With and more foot traffic with better weather, officers appear to be stepping up enforcement.

Police issued at least four tickets within an hour on Tuesday afternoon, many for drivers failing to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk. The village council has also held discussions to increase the number of officers downtown to quell what's becoming an increasingly bigger concern, especially among parents. Police in 2010 created "sting" operations to nab drivers while also issuing educational safety tips.
