Ridgewood Crew Team Scores Gold Medals at SRAA National Championships

Many of the team's seniors plan to row in college.

Ridgewood Crew Team Scores Gold Medals at SRAA National Championships
The following was submitted to Patch by reader Susan Carley.

Ridgewood Crew has wrapped up another winning season with one gold medal, two silver medals, and one bronze medal at the Scholastic Rowing Association (SRAA) of America's National Championships at Mercer Lake, West Windsor over Memorial Day Weekend.

Remarkably, this final regatta for seniors, Maeve Cannon and Sophie Noel, capped a two-year winning streak for this dynamic duo, rowing a lightweight double -- a feat virtually unheard of in the rowing community.

Illness and poor weather conditions prevented senior Joseph Criscitiello, who rows the Men's 1X scull, from participating in the last 3 regattas. His sister, Amanda, a triplet, who rows in the Girls Varsity 4X, captured silver at SRAA & the Stotesbury Regatta, and bronze at the Cities Regattas.

Amanda, who will row at the University of Delaware in the Fall, teamed up with fellow senior, Emma Brickfield, who will row for the College of the Holy Cross, and two juniors, Julia Hefferon and Bridget Callaghan.

Seniors and Lightweight Doubles team, Mike Orlando and Edward Prettyman raced for bronze at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta.  The Girls Varsity 4+, seniors, Gabi Gentile, Brindley Sisco, Caitlin Tedeschi, and Julia Brover (cox), along with junior, Emily Crowe, faced the challenges of this strong field of contenders and provided formidable competition.

The Girls JV Quad, comprised of Erin Brennan, Caroline Lampone, Melissa Marcus, and Bridget Mullen had a very successful season as their first season rowing together, capturing silver at Cities and a bronze at SRAA.

Likewise, the Freshmen Girls Quad, Claire Callaghan, Melissa Dexter, Jordan Wittmaack, and Amanda Literati, had a strong inaugural season, capturing silver at Cities, Stotes, and SRAA.

Head Coach Boris Roque said he is happy about the overall team's results. At the freshmen & JV levels, it was a year of team building, and he said he is proud of the accomplishments of the Girls JV 8+ (who secured a spot in the Cities finals); the Boys JV 8+, JV 4+, and 2nd JV 4X; and the Freshmen Boys & Girls 8+ and 2nd Girls 4X, as well as the Boys JV 4X - Declan Hamilton, Brendan Caltavuturo, Will Prettyman and Seamus McCooe who took bronze at Cities, silver at States and placed 4th in the finals at the SRAA Nationals Regatta.

Any incoming freshmen interested in rowing for the 2015 RC Team, please email lizlavin@verizon.net and check out the Ridgewood Crew website,  www.ridgewoodcrew.com. A Learn-To-Row Program, available at Nereid Boat Club,  www.nereidbc.org or PRRA,  www.prra.net, and a swim test (YMCA) are pre-requisites for RC tryouts.
