Anthony Garofalo received several military medals and lapel buttons for his service to the US Navy during World War II

This week, Rep. Scott Garrett (NJ-05) honored World War II veteran and River Edge resident Anthony Garofalo with three medals and two service lapel buttons he earned serving his country as a sailor in the U.S. Navy.

“When his country needed him most, Mr. Garofalo answered the call to duty and protected the United States and the rest of the world from the unspeakable horrors of tyranny and oppression,” said Garrett while presenting the medals and lapel buttons to Mr. Garofalo. “Words cannot express how honored I am to deliver these medals and lapel buttons to a true American hero. Our nation is eternally grateful for Mr. Garofalo’s bravery and sacrifice.”

Garofalo served aboard several naval destroyers including the USS Albermarle, USS Moffett and USS Charles Ware from May 1943 to November 1945. He attended naval torpedo school and served as a turret operator. After his military service, Garofalo continued to serve his community as a firefighter in Hackensack for over 25 years.

He was presented with the following medals:  World War II Victory MedalAmerican Campaign Medal and  African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal along with the  Honorable Service Lapel Button and  US Navy Honorable Discharge Lapel Button.
