Fair Haven's Herbert Howard Dies at 81
Services are slated for Wednesday.
Longtime Fair Havenite Herbert Howard died at home on Aug. 28 at 81.
Born on March 25, 1932 to the late Clinton and Elizabeth Howard, he was a graduate of Rumson Fair-Haven Regional High School, where he excelled in track and field, according to legacy.com. Herbert started his own landscaping business in the late 1960s and continued to work for more than 50 years until his health failed him.
When news of his death hit the Fair Haven Facebook page, many were deeply saddened and the comments flowed.
With many blessings to the family sent, Bonnie Tilly summarized the feelings of many longtime residents of the borough, saying he was "one of my favorite Fair Havenites."
"Mr. Howard was a great guy and a hard worker," said Bill Acker. "He will be missed big time."
"Prayers to the Howard family," said Winnie Albert-Johnson.
He is survived by: his wife of 57 years, Norma Bland Howard; a son, Herbert B. Howard; a daughter, Kimberly S. Howard, all of Fair Haven; one grandson Jarryd H. Howard, of Long Branch, NJ; two brothers, Whalen Howard, of Middletown, and Rudolph Howard, of Fair Haven, who sat by his side every day of his illness; two sisters, Bessie Hicks, of Red Bank, and Elizabeth Taylor, of Fair Haven; and a host of many other relatives and friends.
A viewing will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Childs Funeral Home, 364 Shrewsbury Ave. Red Bank.
The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m., immediately after the viewing. The interment will be held at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls.
