The high school, located at the North Beach tip of Sandy Hook, was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy.

The first day of school will be particularly special for the students of the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (MAST), as the school community will return to its home on Sandy Hook for the first time since Hurricane Sandy.

The storm left books, chairs and desks tossed about the inside of the thirteen small, reinforced-concrete buildings on the campus and mounds of sand everywhere, Parent Teacher Association President Edward Failla explained.

In the immediate aftermath, MAST students were housed at St. Joseph's in Keyport. Now, ten months later, the school has been gutted and rebuilt.

"MAST is a strong community, and we can survive anywhere," Failla said. "But there's nothing like being home."

MAST is a highly competitive Monmouth County Vocational School charged with providing a small and nurturing school community for students who wish to study marine life and the environment.

The first day of school will be Monday, Sept. 9.
