Crash, Tractor Trailer Fire Closes Turnpike In South Brunswick

A two-vehicle crash that caused a tractor trailer to ignite occurred in the southbound local lanes of the N.J. Turnpike in South Brunswick early Saturday morning, New Jersey State Police said.

The driver of the van, Troy Claffee, 48, of Bronx, N.Y., was “slowly driving” his Honda Odyssey in the right lane at milepost 77.1 when a truck driver by Elliot Remi, 32, of Queens, N.Y. hit him from behind.

The tractor-trailer jackknifed in the roadway and became fully engulfed in flames, State Police said.
Remi was able to exit the truck uninjured. Claffee sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital by ambulance.

The right and center lanes were closed for an extended period due to the investigation and cleanup, according to police.
No charges are expected at this time but the accident remains under investigation.
