Residents report chalked sidewalks with a message for the new Congress

Million Moms Chalk Maplewood, South Orange

One Million Moms for Gun Control has brought their messages to the streets and sidewalks of South Orange and Maplewood, chalking slogans on sidewalks aroun the community.

The Indianapolis-based advocacy group is, according to a release, "leveraging the collective power of mothers across the country through social media to demand action on gun control legislation the first day of the new 113th Congress on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013."

As part of the campaign, which supports new and strengthened gun control laws, as well as the Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act, mothers across the country write the slogan ‘Moms Demand Action’ and sign it with a heart and 1MM4GC, the acronym for One Million Moms for Gun Control, on sidewalks in front of their homes, train stations, schools and other public places.

Locally, residents saw the sidewalk messages throughout the South Orange-Maplewood community, including a number of spots on Valley Street and in front of Columbia High School.

Nationally, group members or supporters are changing their Facebook profile pictures to the One Million Moms for Gun Control logo; inviting 26 friends to join One Million Moms for Gun Control’s Facebook page in honor of the 26 Sandy Hook victims; and to Tweet using the hashtags #momsdemadaction, #momsforguncontrol and #1MM4GC.

Founder Shannon Watts established the group in the wake of the . Coincidentally, Thursday was the first day Sandy Hook Elementary School students returned to class since the event.

“Mothers simply won’t stand for any delay or political antics that keep new laws from being introduced and voted on by the House and Senate," said Watts. "If these legislators fear the National Rifle Association, just wait until they’ve felt the pressure of millions of angry moms."
