SOMS Students Read the Writing on the Wall

South Orange Middle School debuts Wall of Higher Learning

The new Wall of Higher Learning in the South Orange Middle School cafeteria was created as a way to showcase the colleges and universities SOMS students have attended upon graduation from high school. The art on the Wall was painted by former SOMS student, Connor Davenport  (a Columbia High School senior who will be attending the Maryland Institute College of Art—MICA—next year) and pennants representing the colleges of SOMS students from the CHS Class of 2012 are now hanging on the Wall thanks to the help of parents Steven Davenport, Lisa Nolet and Jesse Wendt.

According to Principal Joe Uglialoro, “We want to establish a college-bound culture at SOMS in which all students beginning in 6th grade aspire to attend a 4 year college. Most importantly, we want them to realize every day that students like them, who have gone through SOMS, have gone on to these great schools.”  SOMS students are excited about the Wall and it has motivated many conversations about the colleges that they would like to attend. Pennants will be added every year.

Editor's Note: If you have a pennant to spare, or have contacts at a college or university, you can drop off or send pennants to:
