Teaneck Fencer Overcame Injury to Reach 2012 Olympics

Maya Lawrence, a graduate, refused to let painful injury stop her as she advanced her fencing career to reach the 2012 Olympics.

The epee fencer tore her right ACL in 2009, a year after injuring the left, The Record reported. Still, the is part of the first US women’s epee team to win a medal at a World Cup.

Lawrence was a member of U.S. World Championship and National Teams in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2011.

Lawrence, a Princeton graduate who has a master’s degree from Columbia, has also been forced to put her career on hold for practices, Forbes.com reported.

The Teaneck native first started fencing in her sophomore year at Teaneck High School.
