Early Tuesday Fire Consumes Truck

Fire on Point of Woods street spreads to utility pole early Tuesday

Early Tuesday Fire Consumes Truck

A pick-up truck caught fire early Tuesday morning, spreading to the 8-foot trailer it was pulling, and then setting utility pole wires ablaze.

The 3:20 a.m. fire on Fairway Drive in the Point of Woods section of Toms River began in a Ford F-150 parked on the roadway. An 8-foot long construction trailer filled with tools was attached, and the fire spread there and then up a to power lines overhead, said First District #1 Chief John H. Lightbody.

Station 25 of Cardinal Drive and Station 26 of Hooper Avenue firehouses were dispatched to fight the flames.

Station 26 Chief Jeff Cirz first arrived to find the Ford heavily involved in fire, said Lightbody. Firefighters used fire fighting foam, dosing the pick-up truck in order to stop the fire from consuming the attached trailer.

"The fire was rapidly knocked down, and suppressed with the pickup truck being destroyed by fire, and the trailer suffering fire and heat damage to the exterior, the contents of the trailer were predominantly undamaged," said Lightbody in an email.

Utility companies responded to assess the damage to overhead wires, he said.

The fire origin and cause is under investigation by the Toms River Twp. Bureau of Fire Prevention, and Detective James McGovern of the Toms River Twp. Police Department, Fire/Arson Investigation Unit. Anyone with information should call police headquarters at 732-349-0150.

Fire Chief Cirz and Fire Chief John Gonzalez of Station 25 oversaw the fire response.
