Mary Ellen Slocum (Zigo), 66, of Wall, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2014 at her home in Wall.

Born in New York City to John S. and Ann F. Zigo, she was raised in Riverdale, New York. Mary Ellen went on to attend Georgian Court University where she was a member of the Glee Club. She graduated in 1969 with a Bachelors Degree in English, and minored in Theology.

Mary Ellen resided in Lavallette when she took her first teaching position with the Toms River school system. She married her beloved husband of 37 years, the late Robert E. Slocum Jr. in 1975, and has resided in Wall Township ever since.

Mrs. Slocum was a committed high school English teacher with the Toms River school system for 18 years. She taught at both Toms River North and East; where she enjoyed coaching the Color Guard and directing school plays.

She then retired from teaching in 1987 to become a dedicated homemaker and stay-at-home mom. Mary Ellen was very active as a volunteer at Allenwood Elementary School for student events, the Girl Scout Troops of Monmouth County, and donated religiously to the MDA and ASPCA.

At home, Mary Ellen enjoyed planting flowers, taking walks, baking for family and friends, and always put others before herself. She also loved traveling with her family to Lancaster, PA, and donating her time to help under-privileged families at Christmas and Easter time at St. Martha's Church. She was a guardian to many, as well as a child of God.

She was preceded in death by her dear father John S. Zigo, and her beloved husband Robert E. Slocum, Jr. both in 2012.

Surviving are her dear mother Ann F. Slivko Zigo, her beloved daughter Beth Ann Slocum and fiancé Brian Mackey, her loving mother and father-in-law, Robert E. Sr. and Joan Slocum, her dear brother in law, Dr. Richard Alan Slocum and wife Rosemary, and many cousins within the Noorigian and Zigo families.

She was a guardian to many, as well as a child of God.

She was preceded in death by her dear father John S. Zigo, and her beloved husband Robert E. Slocum, Jr. both in 2012.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2014 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, May 19 at St. Martha's R.C. Church, Point Pleasant. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Toms River.
