Medical Device In Garbage Can Sparks Evacuation At Ocean County College: Sheriff

Breaking: The device was making noise and caused officials to evacuate the Kean/Ocean Gateway building.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — Ocean County College was evacuated briefly on Monday afternoon after a suspicious package was reported in a garbage can, Ocean County Sheriff Michael Mastronardy said.

The package turned out to be a medical device, an insulin pump that was making noise, Mastronardy said. There were no injuries reported.

The incident began about 2 p.m. when the device was reported in a garbage can in the Kean/Ocean Gateway building, according to students. The building was evacuated while the package was investigated, but the all-clear was given shortly before 3 p.m. and students allowed to return to the building.
