2 Cases Of Needles in Halloween Candy, Prompting N.J. State Police Alert

Check your loot: Two cases have been reported of sharp objects found in Halloween candy, prompting the New Jersey State Police to issue an alert.

Detectives and troopers from the New Jersey State Police Port Norris Station are investigating the report of a needle found in Halloween candy collected in one New Jersey trick-or-treater's bag.

And Barnegat police are asking parents to check their children's Halloween candy after a small pin was found in a Kit Kat bar that was not sealed.

On Halloween, a Commercial Township mother told detectives that between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. she discovered a sewing needle in a Tootsie Roll candy that her child collected during trick-or-treating earlier in the evening.

There are no suspects at this time. This is an active and ongoing investigation.

"As our detectives continue to investigate this incident, we strongly recommend that parents continue to check their children's Halloween candy," the state police said. "Many of us with kids may not have gotten around to checking the mounds of candy, but let's get it done tonight. We'll keep you updated as this unfolds."

In Barnegat, a resident reported that the pin was discovered in a candy bar handed out in the Tall Timbers development, according to a Nixle alert from police.

"The wrapper was allegedly compromised," the alert states. "The candy was not sealed. We have received no other reports."
