State officials visited the Downtown Toms River Farmers Market this week, talking up the value of such markets and reminding locals that they normally remain open through the fall.

New Jersey had 141 community farmers markets this season, eight of which were new, officials with the state Department of Agriculture said this week. Toms River's farmers market is is open Wednesdays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Nov. 20, with a special Thanksgiving market on Monday, Nov. 25. 

The market, which sets up shop on West Water Street and Irons Street, features four produce farmers, one organic farmer and numerous vendors selling honey, crab cakes, baked goods, nuts and candy, hot sauces, olive oils, wine and more.

"We’re proud to have one of the busiest markets in New Jersey," said Jody Alessandrine, Executive Director of the Toms River Business Development Corporation.

Alessandrine thanked state Agriculture Secretary Douglas H. Fisher for visiting the Toms River market this week.

"You can find an abundance of fruits and vegetables still available at farmers markets throughout the state," said Fisher, who is touring markets statewide.

In addition to the Toms River farmers market, three other locations in Ocean County will be hosting markets this fall:

  • Barnegat – Oct. 24, with a special holiday market on Sunday, November 24
  • Seaside Park – Oct. 13
  • Tuckerton Seaport – Sept. 21
