Two subcontractors were injured in a construction accident this afternoon at 103 Susquehanna Drive, Toms River Police spokesperson Ralph Stocco said.

Police and medical units responded to the site at 1:24 p.m. on Sept. 23 on a report of two workers who had fallen through the third floor of a townhouse under construction.

Officers are trying to determine what caused a portion of the building to give way, he said.

“The two unidentified male subcontractors were on the third floor of the townhome that is being built,” Stocco said. ”The floor broke away from beneath them and they fell and landed on the second floor, which also then broke lose. The workers finally landed on the main level on top of a large amount of construction debris. Initial reports are that one man landed on nails which then became lodged in his body.”

One man was taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center and the other to Kimball Medical Center for treatment of their injuries. Construction officials and investigators remain on the scene as the investigation continues, he said.

“This incident is still unfolding and no further information is available at this time,” Stocco said.
