Escape to one of the world’s leading sculpture parks, about an hour from northern New Jersey

A Great Escape For the Whole Family: Storm King Art Center A Great Escape For the Whole Family: Storm King Art Center

Spending a summer day at Storm King Art Center is one of those fabulous day trips that makes you feel extremely grateful for living in this part of the country.  Take the kids on this escape, or not.  Either way, you’ll be glad you went.

Known throughout the art world as one of the world’s leading sculpture parks, Storm King Art Center is about an hour from northern New Jersey, in New York’s lower Hudson Valley.  It’s basically a 500-acre retreat comprised of fields, hills, and woodlands, and it provides the setting for a collection of more than 100 stunning sculptures by such artists as Mark Di Suvero and Andy Goldsworthy.

Many of the sculptures are absolutely enormous, and situated so that visitors can run between them, walk through or under or around them, and gaze up at them.  The youngest visitors do love to just run, or roll, over the hills from sculpture to sculpture, and we’ve known an adult or two to similarly partake in the vast outdoor artistic celebration that is Storm King.

If you do plan to spend the day, pack a picnic or get lunch from the Storm King Café which offers a great selection of fresh salads, sandwiches, snacks, and specials – made form organic, locally grown ingredients whenever possible.  There are also special kid-friendly items such as PB & J, and hot dogs (made from organic, grass-fed beef, of course).

Also note that this summer, specially selected works by Mark di Suvero are on view almost as a little Storm King on Governors Island in a limited-engagement show “Mark di Suvero at Governors Island: Presented by Storm King Art Center.”
