Man Jailed After Fourth of July Fight Over Using The Bathroom

Two North Jersey men were arrested and charged with assault after beating a gas station attendant with a block of wood and injuring two others, police said Wednesday.

Salvatore Giordano, 29, of Elmwood Park and Salvatore Vernacchio, 31, of Wayne were drinking prior to a fight at the Getty gas station at Allenwood and Route 34 and began arguing with Getty employees about using the station’s bathroom.

Vernacchio was given a key to the bathroom, which was attached to a 10-inch wooden rod that he began using as a weapon against the three Getty employees, Sgt. Heath Bono said.

A 50-year-old woman employee received a blunt force injury to the head, and her two sons had scrapes and bruises, Bono said.  The trio declined medical treatment.

Giordano was charged with simple assault. Vernacchio was charged with aggravated assault, Bono said. Vernacchio was taken to Monmouth County jail, Freehold, in lieu of $9,000 bail, according to jail records.
