Car Fire Causes Rt. 22 To Close In Green Brook

A car went up in flames Sunday night causing Route 22 West to close for about 45 minutes in Green Brook, police report.

GREEN BROOK, NJ — A car fire caused a portion of Route 22 West in Green Brook to close Sunday night.

A man driving a black 2011 Hyundi Sonata was on the highway around 8 p.m. when the engine started to make a tapping noise, Green Brook Police Captain Samuel Caramela reported.

The driver pulled over near Warrenville Road, got out of the car and noticed flames coming from the engine compartment, Caramela said.

By the time police arrived, the car was fully engulfed. Police tried to extinguish the fire without success, Caramela said.

A portion of the highway was closed for about 45 minutes while the fire was extinguished by the Green Brook fire department.

There were no reported injuries.
