Boy Pronounced Brain Dead In Route 80 Crash Moved Leg And Head, Report Says

Michael Lavecchia Sr. said he saw his grandson move his leg, shoulder, and head Monday at the hospital.

A 13-year-old boy who was pronounced brain dead Sunday following a crash on Route 80 that killed his father and friend has moved since being admitted to the hospital.

Michael Lavecchia Sr., the grandfather of Michael “Mikey” Lavecchia III, said he was his grandson move his leg, shoulder, and head Monday at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, NJ.com reported.

Lavecchia III was pronounced brain dead shortly before noon Sunday following the Honda CRV his father was driving crash into a Mack truck parked on the side of the road, NJ.com reported. He was being kept on life support until his organs could be donated.

Michael Jr. and Giovanni LaBoy, the younger brother of MIchael Jr.’s fiancee, died Saturday, New Jersey State Police said.

Laureen Hernandez, Mikey’s mother, kept vigil over Mikey Sunday while doctors searched for someone to receive his organs, the report stated.

Lavecchia Sr. had the boy’s death certificate destroyed Monday night after seeing his grandson move, the report stated.

The family wants to move Mikey to Stony Brook University Hospital in Stony Brook, New York.
