Officer Hit By Postal Truck Recovering At Home

Sean Mitchell is resting at home after being hit by a postal truck while riding his bicycle training for a charity race.

Officer Sean Mitchell is home and recovering from a bicycle accident where he was hit by a postal truck.

Mitchell was riding his bike on Demarest Drive Aug. 22 when a U.S. Post Office truck made a left turn out of a driveway and hit Mitchell, police said. He was training for the multiple sclerosis charity bike race.

MItchell tried to stop, but he was hit and thrown off his bike and into the air. He landed face down on the pavement. He injured vertebrae in his neck and suffered internal bleeding.

Capt. Mark McGrath said Mitchell will wear a neck brace for several weeks and, if the injuries heal properly, can begin physical therapy.

Mitchell will be placed on modified assignment when he returns to work, standard procedure whenever an officer comes back from being injured, police said.

The truck’s driver, Edward Gomez-Almonte was issued a motor vehicle summons for careless driving, police said.
