Road Race Led to Car Vs. Warehouse Crash

A National Park driver lands in the hospital after crashing his car into the Nine West warehouse Dec. 23.

A National Park man was trying to turn Mantua Grove Road into an international speedway shortly before Friday's , witnesses told police following the accident.

Eyewitnesses told a pair of cars appeared to be racing as they headed east from the bend by Route 295 when one lost control at a high rate of speed.

Gary W. Clay, 60, came out on the losing end of that contest, after his 2002 Pontiac Firebird went off the road, plowed through a landscaped berm and smacked into the side of the building.

Police said they weren't able to find a second car, though they could confirm Clay was attempting to pass when the crash occurred.

Clay, who was in stable condition at Cooper University Hospital, was cited for reckless driving, failure to maintain a lane, driving while uninsured and failure to wear a seatbelt.
