Scouts Gather for District Pinewood Derby
Top racers and car makers from around region convene in Westfield.
The Presbyterian Church cafeteria became the center of the racing universe Saturday morning. NASCAR didn't move the Indy 500 to Westfield, but rather scout racers from around the region came together for the annual Pinewood Derby.
Members of scout packs from around the Watchung Mountain District gathered for the derby finals, to determine the best racers and car designers in the area. Scouts came from packs in Berkeley Heights, Millington, Mountainside, New Providence, North Plainfield, Scotch Plains, Stirling, Summit, Warren, Watchung and Westfield.
Racers were judged in three categories. First the traditional racing with the fastest car winning. The second being car design. With some scouts going all out for design, prizes were given for most original and best in show.
