Westfield Education Association Awards Scholarships To Class Of 2014
Submitted by Elizabeth Shull of Jefferson Elementary School

This year’s WEA scholarship is awarded to Christine Ferraro. Christine plans to attend Cabrini College in Radnor, PA and plans to study exercise science. The scholarship is based on academic achievement, school activities, and community service. Christine’s mother, Maureen Ferraro, and sister, Caitlin Ferraro, are both teachers at Jefferson Elementary School.

The Barry Judd Memorial Scholarship is given in memory of Barry Judd, who was a well respected World Language Teacher at Westfield High School from 1974 to 1992. Mr. Judd’s teaching career embodied a love for learning and a devotion to helping others. The award is granted to a WEA member’s son or daughter who will be attending college in the fall.

This year’s recipient is Catherine Higgins. Catherine will graduate from Watchung Hills Regional High School and plans to attend Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA. Her mother is Donna Higgins, a world language teacher who shared her classroom with Barry Judd during the beginning of her career. She teaches Spanish at Westfield High School.

This year's scholarship committee included Moira Abraham, Roosevelt Intermediate School’s Librarian and Chairperson of the WEA Scholarship Committee, Carole Stavitski, WHS School Nurse, WHS School Counselors Faith Qualshie and Jan Fine, Edison Intermediate School Art Teacher, Daniel Black, and Jefferson Elementary School 4th Grade Teacher, Elizabeth Shull.

The awards were presented to the students on May 22, 2014 at WHS. Funds for these scholarships are raised through the generous donations of the Westfield Education Association.
