WHS Students, Coaches Pumped Up About New Fitness Center

A ribbon cutting ceremony celebrated the state-of-the-art gym.

Westfield students interested in getting a first-rate workout need look no further than the newly-renovated fitness center.

At a ribbon-cutting ceremony held Thursday evening, students, alumni, coaches, Board of Education members, supporters of Westfield athletics and members of the Westfield Town Council gathered to celebrate the state-of-the-art facility.

"Everyone is ecstatic," said Westfield schools athletics supervisor Sandra Mamary. "It looks great and the equipment is going to encourage them to come in and get strong and that goes a long way toward reducing injuries. It's new, it's pretty, it's the best equipment you can get."

Outfitted with stationary bicycles, treadmills, weight machines, free weights and all-in-one AMT machines, the center represents the culmination of a shared vision. Mamary said over $150,000 was raised to create the new gym, with funding provided by the Westfield Board of Education, the Westfield Booster Association, town youth programs, alumni and individuals within the community.

Westfield schools superintendent Dr. Margaret Dolan said the new fitness center is a "great example of the community spirit in place in Westfield." She commended all those who contributed to make the center possible.

Westfield Councilman Sam Della Fera agreed, calling the project a study in "teamwork."

Speaking of teams, WHS wrestling coach said he and his crew of grapplers used the facility throughout the summer. "There's nothing you can't do," he said. "It's a coach's dream."

"It's a very big improvement," said WHS lacrosse player Matt Webb.

"It allows us to finish our workouts much faster," added teammate Kyle Hewett. "There used to be just one or two benches in here."
