East Orange Man Charged With Stealing GPS Units, Ransacking Cars

When West Orange police arrested Vincent Thomas for robbery on Jan. 8 and began frisking him, little did they realize just how much the 38-year-old East Orange man had allegedly taken.

Police were called to Rock Spring Road at 9:52 p.m. that night on a report of a suspicious man wearing a dark jacket with kangaroos on it by a woman who saw him standing in the driveway of her home next to the carport on her driveway.

A neighbor told police a short time later he found his car doors open and the car ransacked.

Police began to scour the neighborhood looking for the distinctive jacket and found Thomas walking north on Rock Spring Avenue and began questioning him.

Police noticed Thomas had several large bulges in his pockets and near his stomach. He also reportedly kept reaching around his stomach and pockets, police said.

Officers frisked him and found two GPS units.

Police then turned on the GPS and started to search for local addresses. One GPS had the Rock Spring Road address and the other showed an address on Northfield Avenue.

When officers checked with the Rock Spring Road homeowner, he checked his two cars and noticed the GPS was missing and the cars ransacked.

Officers also checked with the Northfield Avenue homeowner and his GPS was also missing and his minivan ransacked as well.

Thomas was charged with two counts of burglary, two counts of theft of movable property and one count of possession of a controlled-dangerous substance.

In addition, he was also found to have an active warrant from East Orange for $350. He was held pending an appearance in municipal court, police said.

But Thomas apparently wasn’t done yet, police said.

While he was being arrested, a search revealed a clear crack pipe in his front left shirt pocket, two $100 bills, one $1 bill and $14.66 in coins in his front pants pocket.

A short time later, West Orange police were called to a home on Raynor Road to investigate the theft of $200 in cash from the driver-side visor of a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
