6-Alarm Bayshore Recycling Fire In Woodbridge

FDNY and Port Authority fire boats and tankers are now responding. The fire has risen to six-alarm status, and smoke can be seen for miles.

WOODBRIDGE, NJ — A fire broke out Monday afternoon at the Bayshore Recycling Center plant in the Keasbey section of Woodbridge Twp. Because the fire is buried deep within the building, it has grown immensely and has risen to six-alarm status, said a Woodbridge Twp. spokesman.

Nobody was injured in the fire, which spread rapidly through a recycling center and rage for hours Monday afternoon. Bayshore Recycling is near the Driscoll Bridge, which carries the Garden State Parkway over the mouth of the Raritan Bay. So the thousands of drivers driving over the Driscoll Bridge could see the dramatic fire.

Smoke can be seen throughout the area for miles. New York Fire Department and Port Authority fire boats are now responding. Eyewitnesses at the scene said fire crews were racing so fast to get there that one fire engine dropped hose all over the Garden State Parkway.

The fire is inside one of the buildings, said Woodbridge spokesman John Hagerty. The fire appears to have originated in the cardboard recycling area deep within the building itself, he said.

The fire, at 75 Crow Mills Road, had risen to six-alarm status as of about 3 p.m. Mutual aid from surrounding towns has been called in.

Firefighters from Woodbridge, Keasbey, Sayreville, Perth Amboy and Iselin are all on the scene, plus Middlesex County, according to Hagerty.
