Ex-Bergen County Academies Teacher Pleads Guilty In Student Sex Case: Report

Donald DeWitt, 65, was charged with attempted sexual assault and criminal sexual contact last April.

A former Bergen County Academies teacher pleaded guilty last week to endangering the welfare of a child after he was accused last year of having sexual relations with a student, NJ.com reported.

Donald DeWitt, 66, of Warwick, N.Y., was arrested April 13, 2015 and charged with criminal sexual contact, attempted sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child.

The student’s sister discovered sexually explicit e-mails between DeWitt and the victim and told her mother, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office said last year after DeWitt was charged.

The victim’s mother notified local police, who notified the prosecutor’s office, authorities said.

DeWitt was hired to work at the school in 1992. According to his school biography, he received a bachelor’s degree in zoology, a master’s degree in biology, and a doctorate in cardiovascular physiology.

DeWitt has been free on $300,000 bail since April 15, NJ.com reported.

Sentencing is scheduled for May 27.
