Firefighter Hospitalized After Massive Oak Island Blaze

Two residents and a dog escaped the fire without injuries Tuesday night.

OAK ISLAND, NY - A firefighter was hospitalized after a massive blaze on Oak Island off the Robert Moses Causeway on Tuesday night.

Suffolk Police received a call of a fire at about 10:20 p.m.

The Babylon Fire Department responded along with the West Babylon, West Islip, Bay Shore, Lindenhurst, and North Babylon fire departments.

Fire officials say the blaze was contained to one house despite high winds. Oak Island is only accessible by boat and there are no water hydrants. All firefighting was done by fire boats and portable pumps.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries and transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip

At this time, the cause of the fire appears to be non-criminal. The investigation is ongoing.
