Home of the Week: 388 Bedford Center Road

This luxurious 8-acre property features a 12,400 square-foot home, a gunite pool and a guest cottage.

Elegance and history define this gracious Bedford house, named Ridgeland Farm.

Originally built in 1839 by the Thomas Clark family as the main residence for a working dairy farm, the integrity and architectural purity of this extraordinary three story house has been meticulously maintained by each successive generation of owners.

In the early 1920s architect James Gamble Rogers transformed a large farmhouse into the stately colonial that is now situated on four impeccably landscaped acres.

The gardens were designed and laid out in 1923 by Beatrix Ferrand for the Nelson Williams family, who owned the house for almost thirty years. The current owners have brought the house into the new millennium by completely gutting and rebuilding the gourmet kitchen and family room, installing central air conditioning,  expanded the master bedroom suite to include custom designed walk-in closets and luxurious bath, redoing the well systems, new heating systems, plus so many other improvements, just too numerous to mention.

The house is designed for family living and entertaining. The living room is flanked by fireplaces at either end has a herringbone parquet floor. French doors from the formal dining room open out to a covered porch leading into the private gardens.  The library off of the front hall is perfect as a media room. Upstairs, the master bedroom has a sleek sitting room/closet area that is a great escape from the bustle. The sunroom off of the master overlooks the formal gardens, giving a lovely view in each change of the seasons. There are four children’s bedrooms, plus a large office, and two bathrooms on that floor, with four more bedrooms and two bathrooms on the third floor.

The separate guest cottage was completely rebuilt in 2004 and can double as an office or an area for kid’s parties. The heated pool is very private, and has an elegant European feel with lovely brick walls giving a sense of the old world. Additional land is available.
