Another Successful YPIE Dorm Room Drive Event for the Junior League of Bronxville

Another Successful YPIE Dorm Room Drive Event for the Junior League of Bronxville

For a second successful year, the Junior League of Bronxville partnered with Yonkers Partners in Education (YPIE) to support college bound freshman women as the embark on their college careers.

JLB collected donations from their members of dorm room bedding, linens, towels and other essential for 30 graduating high school seniors from YPIE’s college preparatory program.  These young “at risk” women have challenged and overcame many obstacles by being accepted into several reputable colleges and universities in the country. Many of these young women will be the first generation in their families to enter college. “My favorite part is speaking to the girls after they have had a chance to pick their items. Finding out a little more about them, where they are going to college and what their hopes and goals are. The drive is important, as it is so in line with our mission of improving the lives of women. We are, with this drive, hopefully able to ease the journey of these young women as they embark upon the great adventure of education and self-empowerment. Said Steffi Porter, Community Events Co-chair.

The dorm drive’s culmination was a reception and “shopping event” held at Yonkers Library’s River View Room.  The young ladies along with members of their families selected items needed in their new college rooms. Ellen Cutler Levy, director of programs at YPIE, introduced the young women to the event and thanked the generosity of the Junior League for their involvement and donations.  Steffi Porter, the JLB Community Events Chair who spearheaded the event, also spoke to the graduating seniors wishing them future luck in their college careers.   Amy Korb, president of JLB congratulated the girls and gave a brief over view of what the Junior League stands for and their mission of enhancing the lives of women.  The Community Events committee would like to thank Bed, Bath & Beyond for their participation in this drive. All donations came from the registry set up on line at Bed, Bath & Beyond.

Yonkers Partners in Education is a private not-for-profit organization focusing on promoting academic achievement and higher education for students within the Yonkers school district.  YPIE students have access to privately funded programs that provide tools and resources to successfully transition to a two or four-year college or university.
