Chapel School Students Introduced to Opera

Bronxville, NY- On Monday January 13, 2014 The Chapel School hosted an “All About Opera” assembly. Students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade were excited to learn about opera and delighted by the musical treat for their ears. Mr. George Heath, a member of the music faculty at The Chapel School, put together an entertaining and interactive program. The assembly featured 4 highly-regarded opera singers and a pianist performing famous arias along with some fun and informative facts on the pieces and opera.
The assembly started with a brain teaser. Mr. Heath asked, “What do Bugs Bunny and pasta commercials have in common?” They have both featured famous opera music, he explained. Students learned about the history and origin of opera, as well as the roles of the various voice parts.  Baritone Jason Thom, mezzo-soprano Stephanie McGuire, tenor Chad Cygan, soprano Alexis Cregger and Heath, a bass preformed for the students. They explained how the stories, music, costumes and sets all contribute to the experience. Eyes grew big and smiles filled the room when the singers performed selections from Bizet’s “Carmen”, Mozart’s “The Magic Flute”, and Humperdinck’s “Hansel and Gretel”, among others. The students were amazed at the range of their voices and enjoyed acting out "Ah Mes Amis" from Donizetti's La Fille du Regiment which was sung by Chad Cygan.  The younger kids were riveted, especially during the scary Father's aria from Hansel and Gretel performed by Jason Thoms.

The Chapel School is located at 172 White Plains Road in Bronxville. The next open house for The Chapel School is February 7th.  For more information about Village Lutheran Church and The Chapel School and its programs, call 914-337-3202 or visit www.thechapelschool.org.
