Sentencing for Mount Vernon Man Who Killed a Security Guard

Dontan Jenkins, and victim Richard Brown, were both security guards at the Levister Towers Apartment complex in Mount Vernon.

Mount Vernon resident Dontan Jenkins, 34, was sentenced to 17 years to life in prison in connection with the July 2014 killing of fellow security guard Richard Brown at the Levister Towers Apartment complex, announced Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore.

In July of this year, Jenkins pleaded guilty to:

  • one count of Murder in the Second Degree, a class “A” Felony,
  • one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a class “C” Felony.

Both men were security guards at the complex, and Brown had been on the job for less than two weeks at the time of the incident.

According to DiFiore:

During those 10 days, Jenkins and Brown had two altercations including one on July 20, 2014, after another exchange of words during a change of shift.

At approximately 3:38 am on the morning of July 21st, 2014 the defendant returned to the apartment complex, approached the victim who was manning the security guard booth and fired 3 shots through the front plexi-glass window striking and killing the victim.

Mount Vernon Police responded to the scene commenced an investigation.

They developed information that led them to the defendant who was arrested a short time later.

Assistant District Attorney Perry Perrone, Chief of the Homicide Bureau, prosecuted the case.
