Matthew Mayer won best vocalist in the Long Island regional competition.

Commack Student Wins MSG Varsity's Talent Show

Matthew Mayer was awarded the title of  Best Vocalist in the MSG Varsity  Talent Show during the show's season finale Sunday night.

Mayer, who is currently wrapping up his senior year at Commack High School, beat out hundreds of show applicants and outlasted 16 other contestants in an intense seven-week competition.

Mayer chose to perform "I Need A Lover" by John Mellencamp while playing keyboard in the finals rounds, which won over enough hearts and online votes to put him in first place.

The Commack senior thanks others for the "incredible experience" and had told Patch many times he hopes to use his winning experience to continue to help raise breast cancer awareness.

If he won the competition, Mayer told Patch he'd like to use the publicity to raise more awareness about breast cancer and surviving it, in honor of his mother.

Mayer follows in the footsteps of Commack sophomore Samantha Sclafani,

For winning, Mayer will receive a two-day professional studio experience including the opportunity to work with an award-winning produce to cut a demo CD or video, and create custom-designed cover art. The prize package also including a professional photo shoot.
