Sheriff: Two Drunk Drivers Arrested in Commack Over Weekend

One driver's speed topped 100 mph, other man reported for swerving and nearly hitting several cars on the Long Island Expressway.

Two men were arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated in the Commack after over the weekend by Suffolk County Sheriff's Department. 

Victor Almanzar, 24, of Brentwood was arrested on Aug. 25 at roughly 5:52 a.m. on the eastbound Long Island Expressway between Deer Park Road and Commack Road. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, speeding, and several other vehicle and traffic violations. 

Deputy Sheriff Greg Turzer reported he saw Almanzar driving a 2003 Nissan Maxima on the Long Island Expressway at approximately 103 mph. When the officer pulled Almanzar over for a traffic stop, Almanzar had "slurred speech and had an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath." The report states Almanzar was staggering and swaying when asked to stand outside his vehicle, and failed a field sobriety test. 

Almanzar also took a breathing test that resulted in a 0.11 blood alcohol content, according to police reports. He was arraigned in Central Islip Courts and held on $500 cash bond, or $1,000 bond as of Monday. 

Deputy Sheriff Thomas Young received a 911 call at approximately 2:46 p.m. Aug. 25 of a driver serving all over the Long Island Expressway near the Sagtikos Parkway, nearly hitting other cars. Young located the vehicle described to him at a Shell Gas Station nearby on Motor Parkway. 

The driver was Gerald Jones, 46, of Islandia, was observed having slurred speech, bloodshot eyes and the odor of alcohol on his breath. Jones performed poorly on a standardized field test, according to police reports. He also took a breath test resulting in a 0.19 blood alcohol level. 

Jones was arrested and charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated and an outstanding warrant from the First District Court.
