Weather Alert: Freezing Rain Expected Monday

Two days after the blizzard, freezing rain is expected for Monday morning's commute.

Weather Alert: Freezing Rain Expected Monday

Long Island is about to get Mother Nature's form of "salt in the wound" – another wintry event before the week even gets a chance to start.

The National Weather Service has issued a Freezing Rain Advisory for Suffolk County, effective on Monday from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m., and potentially causing a headache for a morning commute.

The forecast is calling for another weather system to push across the area tonight, bringing a bout of freezing rain, mixed with sleet and snow, during the Monday morning commute from 3 a.m. until about 9 a.m., when the system should turn to all rain.

Ice accumulations are expected to only be a trace amount, but a thin sheet of ice is enough to cause spin-outs or cause other malfunctions on mass transit lines, and motorists are advised to take precautions on their trips Monday morning.

Untreated roadways, the NWS advised, could become slick and icy, but conditions are expected to improve throughout the day.

A map to the right shows the expected ice accumulation from the storm as per the National Weather Service.

A Freezing Rain Advisory is issued when periods of freezing rain or freezing drizzle will cause travel difficulties over an extended period of time.

Here is the latest weather forecast for North Babylon and Deer Park.
