Reduced Speed Limits Coming to Some Village Streets: Lawmakers

EAST HAMPTON, NY — Reduced speed limits are coming soon to some streets in East Hampton and Sag Harbor, lawmakers said this week.

New York State Senator Ken LaValle and New York State Assemblyman Fred Thiele announced on Tuesday that New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo had signed legislation they co-sponsored that would allow the Villages of East Hampton and Sag Harbor to reduce the speed limit on select village streets in instances when other engineered traffic calming measures are not feasible to implement, a release said.

The legislation will green light Sag Harbor to reduce the speed limit on Main Street, Bay Street, Madison Street and Jermain Avenue to 20 miles per hour, and the Village of East Hampton to reduce the speed limit on King Street, McGuirk Street, Middle Lane, Mill Hill Lane and Meadow Way to 20 miles per hour, the lawmakers said.

"Narrow and congested village roadways can prove to be dangerous, especially in the busy summer season. The addition of new traffic calming measures is not always feasible due to landscaping configurations and desired community character. In these cases, the best way to achieve the safest streets possible for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians is lowering the speed limit," the lawmakers said in the release.
