Warming Center Opens at Town Hall

Power outages cause EOC to open warming center in East Hampton by 9:45 a.m.

Warming Center Opens at Town Hall

With about 1,300 power outages in the Town of East Hampton due to the blizzard, the joint town and village Emergency Operations Center has decided to open a warming center.

Town Hall will be open to anyone who needs a place to keep warm, or charge cellphones, by 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, according to a dispatcher at the EOC.

No provisions have been made yet for animals, according to the EOC.

"The issue is the weight of the snow on these lines — when the temperatures dropped, the snow froze on the lines," East Hampton Town Supervisor Bill Wilkinson said.

He renewed his request that residents stay home if they can so that the highway department can work on the roads to clear them and then to salt them without having to deal with stuck vehicles.

As far as erosion, Wilkinson said he had only surveyed the southside of Montauk, so far. The erosion "came up to the protection devices the motel owners put in — the rings and bags looks like they protected them," he said.
