Cedarhurst Alters Parking Lot

Village trustees changes zoning for parking lot number one to accommodate merchants and discuss funding for the fire department expansion project.

Cedarhurst Alters Parking Lot

Cedarhurst officials granted the wishes of some village merchants, who were frustrated with the abundance of long term parking taking away from the daily bustling need of short term spaces.

Last weekend, 77 long-term meters in Cedarhurst’s parking lot number one between Washington Avenue and Spruce Street were changed to two-hour parking zones.

Nearly 120 parking spaces in the lot were designated for 12-hour parking, ultimately resulting in limited parking for shoppers, according to disgruntled local merchants.

“Were going to try it out and see what happens,” Village Clerk Sal Evola said. “No matter what you do, some people want long term spots and some people want short term.”

Cedarhurst trustees moved along with the request after store owners from , , and , to name a few, made the last month with hopes to free up space for shoppers in their lot.

Evola said that while it is hard to please everyone in a situation like this, the plan should not cause too much controversy.

Fire Department Expansion Project

The is currently looking for to add an additional garage, training rooms and meeting rooms, however, officials are still looking for a way to take the financial blow off the backs of Cedarhurst taxpayers.

Fire officials are currently seeking grant money to cover some of the cost after the project was initially estimated at $2 million.

“Board members are in favor of allowing the fire department to expand,” Deputy Mayor Benjamin Weinstock said. “While we all would like to see the fire department expand and have the best equipment and best facilities, we’re trying to do it in a way that's most cost effective for our community.”

Cedarhurst trustees are expecting to make a decision on the expansion project at their next meeting, scheduled for Nov. 7 at 8 p.m.
