Cedarhurst Shoppes Goes Up In Flames

Five stores at Cedarhurst Shoppes were damaged after a basement fire. Firefighters had to cut a hole in a floor to reach the blaze.

CEDARHURST, NY — A fire ripped through a block of stores in Cedarhurst Friday morning, causing extensive damage and requiring a response from more than a dozen fire departments. The fire started at about 3 a.m. in the basement of a store at Cedarhurst Shoppes. No one was injured.

Firefighters had to cut a hole in the floor to reach the blaze and extinguish it. Five stores on the strip were damaged by smoke from the fire and water from firefighters' hoses, according to ABC7. It was four-alarm fire; the higher the the number of alarms, the bigger the response from surrounding fire departments.

Nassau Police said the firefighters from the Lawrence/Cedarhurst, Woodmere, Inwood, Hewlett, Long Beach, Valley Stream, Meadowmere Park, Lynbrook, Hempstead, Atlantic Beach, Elmont, Rockville Centre, Freeport, Oceanside, Roosevelt, Baldwin, Malverne, East Rockaway and Lakeview fire departments all responded to the blaze.
