Funds Available to Replace Storm-Damaged Boilers

Up to $5,000 available to homeowners in certain communities.

Legislator Howard J. Kopel, the alternate deputy presiding officer of the county legislature, is pleased to announce that the Long Island Housing Partnership (LIHP) has created a program to provide funding to residents who had heating systems damaged by Super-Storm Sandy.

Here are the guidelines for the program:

Purpose: The Long Island Housing Partnership(LIHP), a private not-profit organization, has funds available to assist homeowners with repairs caused by Hurricane Sandy.

Repairs: LIHP will make up to $5,000, as long as funds are available, to eligible homeowners for repairs to residential heating systems. Eligible types of repairs include purchasing new hot water heaters, oil burners and other essential repairs to a home’s heating and hot water supply systems.

Eligible Areas/Applicants: Homes being assisted must be located in the following communities: Island Park, East Rockaway, Long Beach, Bay Park, Inwood, Mastic, Mastic Beach or the household occupying the home must have an income that is below 80 percent of median income. For a family of four, annual income can not exceed $86,000 per year.

Application Intake: To receive an application homeowners should call LIHP at (631) 435-4710 and request a Disaster Assistance Repair Application (also attached). LIHP will mail the application to the interested applicants. Applicants must complete and return the application with supporting documents to:

Upon receipt of a complete application LIHP will make a determination as to a homeowner’s eligibility to participate in the program. All assistance subject to availability of funds and approval by LIHP. 

Program Implementation: Eligible homeowners will be contacted by LIHP and a repair assessment will be scheduled. The assessment will determine the scope and cost of the work to be done. The homeowner will be required to sign an agreement with LIHP to undertake the repairs. The work will be completed and assigned to a license insured contractor based on the assessment.

Funding Limitations: Funding for this program is limited. Applications will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis until all funds have been committed. Homeowners who receive reimbursement for repairs from insurance or FEMA will be required to repay LIHP so additional homeowners may be assisted.
