Lawrence to Offer Construction Skill Classes

Vocational program may be a "hook" for many students, superintendent says.

Lawrence to Offer Construction Skill Classes

Plans for a vocational program at are moving forward, according to the superintendent of District 15, and students will have the opportunity to build construction skills come September.

The classes will develop skills in the fields of plumbing, carpentry and electrical, among others. The district is partnering with the , where the classes will take place.

Superintendent Gary Schall said that some students have expressed interest in developing these kinds of skills and going into those professions.

“For many students, this will be their motivation for coming to school,” he said. “This could one of the things that could be their hook.”

The district will offer classes in the morning and afternoon with groups of eight to 10 students. It will be a sort of throwback to when students went on a vocation track instead of college — but Schall said that’s not the goal.

“There is the feeling that you provide this for students that aren’t college bound, but that’s not the case,” he said. “We believe all students are college bound.”
