South Shore Standard Ceases Publication

Editor says paper did not get enough backing from advertisers.

South Shore Standard Ceases Publication

The South Shore Standard, which was the only printed alternative to the Nassau Herald in the Five Towns, ceased publication on Thursday, its owner announced.

The action is immediate, and Friday's issue will not be published, Howard Barbanel said.

"Unfortunately ownership and management could not sustain continued losses indefinitely and we did not sufficiently enjoy the support of the community in terms of advertising and the timely payment of the advertising we did have," he wrote. "There is a possibility that we may return in some form as a monthly but that has yet to be decided. I’d like to thank each of you for your efforts on our behalf and for your support."

The weekly newspaper first printed in March 2011 and was headquarted on Broadway in Woodmere.
