Chamber to Honor Patti Tenaglia as 2012 Citizen of the Year

On Friday evening, May 4, at the celebration of its tenth anniversary Pineapple Ball to be held at the Garden City Hotel, the Garden City Chamber of Commerce will honor Patti Tenaglia as its 42nd “Citizen of the Year” for 2012.

This prestigious award was established in 1970 to acknowledge outstanding philanthropic efforts, service to the community by an individual whose efforts have contributed to the high standards, quality of life and well being of the Garden City community and well beyond.

Patti Tenaglia is being honored for the many achievements of the MIRACLE Foundation, which she formed with her late husband, Michael, and which has benefited cancer patients throughout Long island. A vibrant mother of four, Patti currently serves as director of the 501(C)3 Garden City based non-profit, whose mission is dedicated  to improving the lives of those diagnosed with cancer, and to find a cure for this disease. The word “Miracle” was chosen as an acronym for “Making Inroads Against Cancer’s Lasting Effects.” Patti Tenaglia has worked diligently for the past 12 years raising funds for the Foundation’s initiatives, speaking on behalf of the organization, raising cancer awareness and serving as an inspiration to others.

Since its inception in 2000, The MIRACLE Foundation’s accomplishments have included a partnership with the Hospice Care Network to provide intervention to patients facing a life-limiting diagnosis; the creation of the MIRACLE Foundation Pavilion, a state-of-the-art cancer treatment center dedicated to Michael J. Tenaglia and staffed by Memorial Sloan-Kettering healthcare professionals; the provision of a full-time child life specialist to the Cancer Care Center for Kids at Winthrop-University Hospital; the financing of over $600,000 in breakthrough research for Dr. Bert Vogelstein of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins University; and adopting and fully underwriting Back in the Game, an innovative physical therapy and conditioning program for pediatric cancer patients.

The MIRACLE Foundation also granted $330,000 to Dr. David Abramson of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; is the founding sponsor of the Morgan Center, a unique preschool for children with cancer; awarded grants totaling over $500,000 to Dr. Michael Wigler of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory; and enabled and provided tutelage to community service clubs known as MIRACLE Clubs, so that students can make a difference in the fight against cancer.

Patti Tenaglia has received numerous recognitions including that as honoree
at the Garden City Hotel’s annual tree lighting ceremony in 2002 when she reflected, that the honor was actually shared by both she and her late husband Michael.

“I am so proud of what we’ve been able to achieve through the MIRACLE Foundation, and as proud as I am, I am mindful that none of it would have happened without the support of our friends, our family and this incredibly caring and giving community," she said.

Patti recalled that Michael always said that the real story of the MIRACLE Foundation was the story of how a community rallied together to support a cause – the fight against cancer.

Going forward, she said, that she and the trustees of the MIRACLE Foundation would remain (as they always have) committed – using Michael’s example to “make a difference, create awareness and continue to fund breakthrough research.”

Patti Tenaglia will share honors at the Pineapple Ball with John Garvey, recipient of the “Community Achievement Award;” Frank Pelliccione, “Business Person of the Year;” and Vincent R. DiGregorio, MD, FACS, recipient of the “President’s Award.”
