Man Quickly Arrested After Stealing Car With Tracking Device at Roosevelt Field Mall: Police

The incident occurred Wednesday.

GARDEN CITY, NY - A Queens man was arrested soon after he stole a car equipped with a tracking device from a parking lot at the Roosevelt Field Mall on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Dioscoro Cervantes, of Woodside, is charged with third degree grand larceny, third degree criminal possession of stolen property and petty larceny (for a previous warrant), police said.

According to police, a 34-year-old woman parked her 2015 Mercedes-Benz in a parking lot at Roosevelt Field on Wednesday and then went shopping inside the mall. When she returned to the parking lot around 2 p.m., her car was gone, police said.

The woman called police to report the car missing and she also notified Mercedes-Benz that she wished to find out the location of her car with the company’s tracking service, police said.

Crimes Against Property detectives, with the assistance of Mercedes-Benz, were able to locate the vehicle being driven by Cervantes on 40th Road in Flushing around 5:30 p.m.

Cervantes, 49, was taken into police custody without incident, police said. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Thursday. He is being held on $15,000 bond or $7,500 cash bail.
