Police Commish: Be Alert at Local Train Stations

Unsuspecting commuters, especially those on their cell phones, have been accosted at nearby train stations.

Police Commish: Be Alert at Local Train Stations

After several people were "accosted" at nearby LIRR stations while getting off the train, Garden City police commissioner Kenneth Jackson urged village residents to be aware of their surroundings, especially while using their cell phones.

Although there have been no reported incidents at any stations in Garden City, Jackson noted that there seems to be a "bit of a trend" in Nassau County.

"In some area train stations there have been some robberies and larcenies of people who are using the phone. Just be careful of that," he told residents at the June 6 village board meeting.

In Rockville Centre, a 36-year-old female was walking in front of 100 N. Centre Ave. May 5 after coming off the train when she was approached from behind by two suspects. One of the suspects picked her up and threw her to the ground, according to Nassau County police, while the second suspect allegedly took the victim's phone from her hand before fleeing on foot.

The victim sustained cuts and bruises to her face, legs and arms as well as a laceration over her eye and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Two teens from Rockville Centre and West Hempstead, ages 15 and 13, were arrested in connection with the robbery.

Jackson advised incidents like this are also happening to people leaving ATM machines throughout Nassau County.
