A school secretary was struck by an auto in the crosswalk of the Garden City Middle School on Cherry Valley Avenue early Thursday afternoon.

GCMS principal Peter Osroff sent a mass email to parents alerting them of the incident Thursday: "This afternoon a school secretary was struck and seriously injured by a car as she was crossing within the Middle School crosswalk on Cherry Valley Avenue."

Osroff continued, "Years ago, a secretary was killed in the same location. As the school principal, I cannot express more strongly my warning to parents to not allow their children to cross Cherry Valley Avenue when a crossing guard is not present. Directly stated, to act otherwise is irresponsible and jeopardizes the lives of our children. Thank you for your careful attention."

Police and firefighters were on the scene as the woman was treated for a possible compound fracture of her lower leg. She was transported to Winthrop-University Hospital via Nassau County Police Department ambulance.
