Each year, Glen Cove City Hall employees donate non-perishable foods and gifts of clothing and other necessities to a local family in need.
The economy and Hurricane Sandy combined this year to create more such need, so City Hall is expanding its food drive to include the rest of the community. Donations collected will go the the North Shore INN at First Baptist Church, which feeds more than 300 families in need each year.
The INN is in need itself, according to City Hall.
"The shelves are very bare and hopefully we can do a small part in replenishing them," said a statement from the city.
The INN accept all non-perishable items and foods as well as gift cards and money. The organization uses the donations to send families home with a bag appropriate to their needs each holiday.
"This might be diapers for the baby, canned goods for someone without a stove, new gloves and hats for someone who has none etc.," the city said.
The collection will run through Dec. 21. Donations can be dropped off at City Hall at the first-floor reception window or the third-floor clerk's office.
