Deer Found Impaled on Fence

A dead deer was found stuck on a fence Monday in Glen Cove's North Country Colony.

Deer Found Impaled on Fence

A deer was found impaled on the spikes of a metal fence on Valley Road Monday, apparently due to a failed attempt at jumping the fence that surrounds the Carey Estate.

The incident was reported to police at 7:25 a.m. The carcass was removed by Department of Public Works employees about two hours later.

"I didn't know deer were around here," said Marie Scarmato, who lives a block away from the spot.

She was driving her son, Nicholas, to his bus stop when he cried out that he saw a "big brown animal" hanging vertically from a spike on the fence. Scarmato didn't have time to stop but saw the gruesome sight for herself as she returned to her house. She reported it to police, who had already received another call about it.

"A deer was the last thing I expected," she said. "The cops said they have been in the area but can never take a foothold here because they get killed."

A Glen Cove Police spokesman said there have been deer sightings in the area recently, but it is not known if this is the deer that has been seen, or if there are others.

He said the homeowner of the estate was notified.

"Very strange and sad," Scarmato said.
